Joy” is one of the most frequent words in Christianity. In the Gospel in the story of the Annunciation, the angel addresses the Virgin Mary: “Rejoice, O Most Gracious, the Lord is with Thee…”. This word is present in liturgical hymns to the Lord, to the Theotokos, or to the saints.
The icon presented at the Andrei Rublev Museum reminds us of the little-known image of the Three Joys. Although it is not an ancient Russian image – it dates back to medieval European tradition – it was recognized by the Russian Orthodox Church on the basis of God’s response to fervent prayer. A simple Christian woman received three pieces of joyful news in response to her request for help in her misfortunes. Rare for a Russian icon, the plot is connected with the fact that next to the Virgin Mary and the Infant is John the Baptist in the form of a baby. As we know from Sacred Tradition, although they were third cousins, they never met in life.
The icon, as a symbol, captures the Holy Family together.
