Wirgin was a German company that is still known for its Wirgin and Edixa brands and camera types such as Edina, Edinex or Gewirette. It was based in Wiesbaden, the capital of Hesse, and produced a line of fairly inexpensive 35mm SLR cameras from the 1950s to the 1970s, including the Edixa Reflex and Edixa-Mat Reflex. Wirgin was the main manufacturer of focal plane shutter SLRs in West Germany. It also produced some lenses for its cameras, among them a number of M42 thread mount lenses.
Wirgin was founded by the brothers Heinrich, Max and Josef Wirgin in 1920. In 1927 they introduced their first distinctive camera, the Edinex, which they also produced under the brand name Adrette for Adox. In 1934 the company surprised the market with a very small camera with a viewfinder for type 127 film – the Gewirette . From the mid 1930s it also produced cameras with an Edinex 35 mm viewfinder. They came with a Wirgin Gewironar lens and Compur shutter or a Steinheil [ de ]Culminar lens (similar to the Tessar) with a Prontor shutter.
In 1938, Heinrich and Josef Virgin were still running their company in Wiesbaden. However, Nazi persecution of Jews forced them to flee Germany with the help of one of their clerks. Max arrived in the United States on May 14, 1936, Max helped his brothers follow him to America. The Wirgin factory in Wiesbaden became part of the Adox company .
After the war, Heinrich Wirgin returned from America, now as Henry Wirgin, and re-founded the Wirgin company in Wiesbaden. The administrative officer of the American occupied zone of Germany sent Heinz Vaske as a promising candidate to Wirgin. At that time, Waske sold his prototype of a miniature camera to the Americans. In 1951, Vaske, a talented mechanic, became a camera designer. He designed the company’s first SLR camera, a focal plane shutter model, the first such camera in West Germany.
