Dao – single-bladed weapon / falchion / palash / saber / knife / cleaver – Chinese bladed single-bladed weapon, often illiterately rendered when translated as “crooked sword”.
It is a long sword with a blunt end and a hilt made of plain or ebony. It’s very heavy, and it’s almost impossible to fend off a blow. Both martial and ordinary “dao” can only be struck with two kinds of blows: one from the right shoulder down to the left, the other from the left leg up to the right. Any attempt to strike another blow will cause the “dao” to unfold in the hand.
