“Slaves” (Italian: prigioni – prisoners) – famous sculptures created by the famous master Michelangelo Buonarroti, stored in various museums in Europe. They were intended for the unrealized project of the tomb of Pope Julius II in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.
In 1513-1516 Michelangelo created the figures of two “Captives (Slaves)” – The Rising Slave and The Dying Slave, and a sculpture of Moses. The slaves were not included in the final version of the tomb, and in 1546 the sculptor gave the two statues to Roberto Strozzi, Baron di Collalto, a prominent Florentine politician, in gratitude for his hospitality, and the latter presented them to the French king Francis I. The statues were kept at the tomb until 1578, when they were given to the French king. From 1578 they were kept in the Château de l’Écuan, and then in the Château de Poitou by Cardinal Richelieu, where they were admired by G. L. Bernini. In 1793 the sculptures were offered for sale, but were removed as national treasures and entered the Louvre Museum. Four more unfinished statues are kept in Florence. They remained in Michelangelo’s Florentine workshop; in 1564 Leonardo, the master’s nephew, presented them to the Grand Duke Cosimo I; the sculptures were in a grotto in the Boboli Gardens, and in 1909 they were moved to the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence.
