Mephistopheles is an image of the spirit of evil in Renaissance mythology of Northern Europe. In 1587 he became known as a literary character in the German folk book “The Tale of Dr. Faustus…”, and became widely known thanks to the philosophical drama “Faust” by Johann W. Goethe.
Since then, he has become a common character, appearing in other works of art and popular culture. Mephistopheles never became an integral part of traditional magic. He is also called Lucifer’s Shadow and the Prince of Deception.
