Karsten (or Kirsten) Rohde (Karsten Rode, Carsten Rohde, Karsten – local form of the name Christian, Christian) – a German, a subject of the Danish king from the region of Ditmarshen caper fishing in the Baltic Sea was in the service of Ivan the Terrible. He came from the free peasant republic of Ditmarshen.
Originally known as a merchant and captain of his own ship, he traded with Lübeck. Later he became a privateer in the service of the Danish king Frederick II. He acted against Swedish merchants.
At that time, the Livonian War was underway, and Russian troops captured Narva, which became Russia’s trading gateway to the Baltic. At first, trade developed quite successfully, trade turnover grew rapidly, but soon Sweden and Poland entered the war, which with the help of their privateers and fleets began to interfere with Russian trade, intercepting ships going to ports under the control of the Russian kingdom.
Lacking its own fleet, the Russian government began to look for ways to counter the Swedes and Poles in the Baltic. At this time, Rohde went into the service of Duke Magnus, and in fact under the patronage of Ivan the Terrible. In 1570 in Arensburg on Ivan the Terrible’s money he bought a pinnace, arming it with three cast-iron cannons, ten leopards (less powerful guns), eight pishalas and two battle picks for breaking the sides. Thirty-five men of crew were hired.
In March 1570, Ivan the Terrible issued a letter of protection to Carsten Rohde, which stated, in particular, “…to take the enemies by force, and to search for their ships by fire and sword, to capture and destroy them according to our majesty’s letter… And our voivodes and order men to keep that ataman Carsten Rohde and his skippers, companions and helpers in our harbors at sea and on land in care and honor”. According to the treaty, Rode was to sell captured goods in Russian ports, supply Narva for the needs of Russia
