The engraving depicts the Piazza Vecchia Piazza Vecchia for centuries this square has been a Bergamo’s seat of political power, today it is a place where people meet and spend their free time. The square is dominated by magnificent and majestic buildings, built in perfect harmony according to the laws of geometry. Even the famous architect Le Corbusier said that “you can no longer touch a pebble, otherwise it would be a crime”. First on the square we see the town hall, Palazzo della Ragione, built at the end of the 12th century, making it the oldest city government building in Lombardy today, and the Torre Civica tower, also called the Campanone. In the center of the square sits the elegant small Contarini Fountain, given to the city in 1780 by the Doge of Venice, Alvise Contarini. On the opposite side of the town hall stands the white palace of Palazzo Nuovo, the New Palace, which was the seat of the city government until 1873 and today houses the Angelo Mai Library, which houses the Italian book heritage, including incunabula (first printed books), 16th century books, prints, manuscripts and other priceless relics, making it one of the most important libraries in Italy.
