The old folk tale of Reineke the Fox was given a new life in its time, thanks to a talented literary translation by Johann W. Goethe. Reineke the Fox is the hero of the French medieval satirical epic – “Roman de Renard” (“Roman of the Fox”), a monument of French urban literature of the late XII-XIV centuries. The animal hero reflects the worldview of the rising urban class. A special cycle of poetic tales about the Fox is formed in northeastern France in the XII-XIII centuries for a century and a half. From these works and grows the “Novel of the Fox”, created by a number of authors. It is based on tales about animals, formed in the Early Middle Ages. By the middle of the 12th century, these tales began to be combined into a vast epic cycle, using, in addition, various medieval treatments of Greek and Roman fables.
