Why Zverev was not an “honored artist”: Anatoly Zverev was not an “honored artist” because this status is official recognition in the Soviet system, and Zverev was a nonconformist leader and an outcast of the official system, which prevented him from receiving official recognition, although he was famous abroad and considered a brilliant artist.
The creative heritage of Anatoly Zverev counts more than 30 thousand works. The variety of circumstances of creation of the artist’s works, materials used in this process and the mixture of schools makes it difficult to make a reliable art history expertise to separate the real works from the fakes present on the market. In these conditions, “connoisseurship” becomes the only way to work with the heritage of A. T. Zverev.
Zverev was one of the first Soviet artists to learn the artistic lessons of Jackson Pollock; in many respects he was close to Tachism. From the mid-1950s, Zverev’s “main sponsor, collector and propagandist” was Georgy Kostaki, who considered him the first Russian Expressionist. Zverev’s apologists claim that Picasso himself referred to him as a great Russian draughtsman, and Robert Falk pathetically declared that every touch of his brush was sacred.
In 2013, the private Museum of AZ (Anatoly Zverev) was opened in Moscow.
