Aleksandr Mikhailovich Lyapunov (June 6, 1857, Yaroslavl – November 3, 1918, Odessa, Kherson Province) was a Russian mathematician and mechanic. He was the founder of the theory of stability of equilibrium and motion of mechanical systems with a finite number of parameters. He also worked in differential equations, hydrodynamics, and probability theory. Brother of the composer S. M. Lyapunov.
