Foreign Trade Association “Exportkhleb” was established by the USSR Council of People’s Commissars on April 30, 1923. It performed in the USSR the functions of a monopoly state agent for export-import operations with grain, fodder, oilseed products, rice and other cereals and grain products.During the first 5 years from 1923 to 1927 about 9.8 million tons of grain was exported from the Soviet Union. The entry of the Soviet Union into the foreign market with grain exports played a major role in breaking the economic and political blockade of the socialist state and contributed to the process of its diplomatic recognition.
