Reference: Banska Bystrica was originally a small Slovak village. In the 13th century several dozen families of German colonists moved here, the settlement began to grow rapidly and in 1255 Hungarian King Béla IV granted the settlement city rights. In the Middle Ages Banská Bystrica was an important industrial and commercial center of the Hungarian kingdom. In August 1944 the town became the center of the Slovak National Uprising against the German occupiers. Banska Bistrica was the headquarters of the uprising. When the uprising was suppressed, the town was retaken by German troops. Banská Bystrica was liberated by the Soviet troops of the 2nd Ukrainian Front on March 25, 1945 during the Banská Bystrica Offensive Operation.
Now Banská Bystrica is the unofficial capital of Central Slovakia.
