This is the only place in the world, where the hands of talented craftsmen create a kind of blue-and-white porcelain or majolica products with polychrome painting. The craft began with the manufacture of simple jugs, bowls and other household vessels necessary in every peasant family. They were made by peasants from red clay. Gzhel was first mentioned in written sources in 1328, in the spiritual letter of Ivan Danilovich Kalita.
