Victor Marie Hugo is a French writer (poet, novelist and playwright), one of the main figures of French Romanticism, political and public figure. Senator of France from the department of Seine (1876-1885). Member of the French Academy.
In 1836, Alexander Pushkin called Hugo “a writer of the latest Romantic school” and criticized Hugo’s play Cromwell, noting that it was a “dull and monstrous” drama with a “stumbling course” in which “there is no action, much less amusement.” Pushkin called Hugo a “minor poet,” “uneven, coarse … a favorite of the French public,” the author of “ugly dramas” and “ridiculous fictions … that have offended the great shadow of [Milton]”
