The beginning of the use of tortoise shell as a facing material and for decorating various, including jewelry, as well as for inlays, dates back to 80 B.C. Most often used the shell of sea turtles of the type of bissa or a real carriage.
The art of inlaying tortoise shell plates with copper and other metals emerged in Italy in the 16th century. In the XVII century it spread throughout Central Europe. Andre-Charles Boule, Louis XIV’s chief furniture maker, took this technique to the limits of his skill.
With the beginning of the nineteenth century, tortoiseshell products experienced a “revival”. Turtle hair combs became fashionable in the 1870s after the first production of the opera Carmen. The fashion for tortoise shells reached its peak in the early 20th century
The heyday of the use of tortoiseshell jewelry is associated with the beginning of the Victorian era: a period of industrial growth, the growth of cities, and the arrogant psychology of the middle class, who sought to surround themselves with the attributes of a “luxurious life”. In the new class, it was considered a good idea to wear tortoiseshell jewelry during the day, which was less chic and less expensive than gold jewelry. In Russia and Europe, the horny cover of tortoise shell began to be used for making hairpins, combs, snuff boxes, cuttings, inlaid items in the XVIII-XIX centuries.
