An antique, cast-iron slab inscribed, “A. Я. Kop’, ‘Hortica’, ‘and Kichkas’, ‘Yekat. GUB.”
А. Я. Kop’y” is a spelling of the surname of Abraham Koop (1863-1938) in pre-revolutionary orthography, who was an industrialist and founder of the cable factory on Verkhnyaya Khortytsya. It was the oldest operating factory in the town of Aleksandrovsk (now Zaporozhye), which produced farming mechanisms, mill machinery and oil engines.
“Khortytsya” and “Kichkas” are the names of geographical features located in the Zaporizhzhya region of Ukraine, near the Dnieper River.
“YEKAT. GUB.” means “Ekaterinoslav Province”, an administrative-territorial unit of the Russian Empire that existed from 1802 to 1925.
