Reference: Lev Aleksandrovich Mey – Russian writer, poet, prose writer, playwright, translator, translated Schiller, Heine, Beranger, Byron, Mickiewicz, Anacreon, Shevchenko, Chénier, Hugo, Milton, Syrokomlya. He translated “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” from Old Russian into the literary language of the XIX century with some deviations from the original; in the translation he used a style close to the Bylin style.
Based on the dramas in verse “The Tsar’s Bride” (1849), “The Pskovite Girl” (and the prologue “Boyarynya Vera Sheloga”) (1849-1859) and “Servilia” were written operas by N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, and also staged in 1915 the movie “Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich the Terrible”.

Collections of Mey’s works were presented in the library of Tchaikovsky, who wrote four romances to texts of his poems and seven to texts of translations. Some of Mey’s poems were recommended to the composer for his romances by N. F. von Meck.

Mey’s poem “The Deliverer” was printed in the second volume of The Grand-Ducal, Tsar and Imperial Hunt in Russia and illustrated by Nikolai Samokish.

Many composers wrote romances on the poems of L. A. Mey.
