Ernst Thälmann (German: Ernst Thälmann; April 16, 1886, Hamburg – August 18, 1944, Buchenwald) – Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Germany (KPG) (1925-1933), member of the Reichstag (1924-1933). He twice ran for president (1925, 1932). From 1925 until banned in 1929, he also headed the Red Front Union, which served for the armed defense of the KPG, especially in street battles with political opponents and the police. Reformed the CPG as a new type of party, as stipulated in the charter of the Communist International. Building on the Soviet thesis of social fascism, the CPG under his leadership fought the SPD as its main political opponent. Thälmann was arrested on March 3, 1933, two days before the Reichstag elections and a few days after the Reichstag was set on fire. He was shot dead in August 1944 after more than eleven years in solitary confinement, allegedly on direct orders from Adolf Hitler.
