Special Department, Special Division, Eighth Department of the VChK / GPU / OGPU / GUGB NKVD USSR – a cryptanalytical service of the RSFSR and the USSR for the protection of the country’s secret information, as well as for the interception and cryptanalysis of encrypted correspondence of other states. It was established on May 5, 1921 by the decree of the SNK of the RSFSR.
