    • On September 1, 1812 in the village of Fili near Moscow a military council was held: Commander-in-Chief Kutuzov summoned military commanders to decide the fate of Moscow.
    • Alexei Kivshenko painted his picture in 1880 as an illustration for the novel War and Peace. Like Tolstoy, he was interested not so much in historical accuracy as in the psychology of the participants of the council. The Museum-Panorama “Battle of Borodino” presents one of the copies painted by the artist’s pupil.
    • The writer showed the course of the council through the eyes of the six-year-old daughter of the owner of the hut, Malasha. This character is also present in the painting: lying on the stove, the girl watches from above. Of course, in reality, the child would not have been allowed to be present at a military meeting.
    • Field Marshal General Mikhail Kutuzov is depicted in an armchair by the stove. On his left hand on the bench by the window sit lieutenant generals Pyotr Konovnitsyn (who was in favor of attacking the enemy near Moscow), Nikolai Rayevsky and Andrei Osterman-Tolstoy (who were against it). The words of Rayevsky are known: “Not on Moscow depends the salvation of Russia. Consequently, more than anything else, the troops should be saved. My opinion: to leave Moscow without a battle”.
    • In the red corner, according to Tolstoy, the artist depicted General of Infantry Mikhail Barclay de Tolly. The general was a firm supporter of surrendering Moscow without a battle. In his memoirs he wrote: “I declared that to save the fatherland the main subject was the preservation of the army”. Next to him sits Lieutenant General Fyodor Uvarov, who also “gave one word of consent to the retreat”.
    • On the left hand of Uvarov is General of Infantry Dmitry Dokhturov. He was strongly opposed to the abandonment of Moscow without a fight and later wrote to his wife: “I am, thank God, perfectly healthy, but I am in despair that they leave Moscow. What a horror! <…> What a shame for the Russians to leave their fatherland without the slightest rifle shot and without a battle”.
    • Major-General Alexei Yermolov was also in favor of the battle of Moscow. Leaning his hands on the table, he rose from his seat – through this pose the artist conveyed the general’s indignation described in the novel. True, the official document records his doubts: “Do we know the roads along which the columns should move to the enemy?”.
    • Colonel Karl Tol (right) and cavalry general Leontius Bennigsen are depicted with their backs to the viewer. The general believed that it was necessary to wait for the enemy near Moscow and give battle. Tolstoy openly disliked Bennigsen as Kutuzov’s opponent in all major disputes.
