The Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (September 21) was established by the Church in the fourth century and is the first bipedal feast of the church year, because according to the old style the church year began on September 1. According to church legend, in the small Galilean city of Nazareth lived an elderly couple – Joachim and Anna. Both spouses were righteous and pious. The holy couple Joachim and Anna had been childless for a long time and lamented that they had no children. When Joachim came to the temple to offer sacrifice to God, the high priest refused him, because he “did not create offspring for Israel”. Then Joachim went into the wilderness in sorrow to pray, while his wife stayed home alone and prayed. At this time they both had a vision of an angel, announcing that “the Lord has answered your prayer, you will conceive and give birth, and your offspring will be spoken of in the whole world.” To Anna was born a Daughter, the purest and most blessed. Above all that was ever created, the beginning of our salvation, our intercessor before God. Heaven and earth rejoiced over Her nativity. The Holy Church rightly calls Joachim and Anna the Fathers of God, because Jesus Christ was born of their Holy Daughter, the virgin Mary.
