Uvlin Uvgun is the main fairy tale character at the Tsagan Sar holiday, the analog of Santa Claus among Mongols.
Uvlin Uvgun is dressed in a long tulup or fur coat, with a large fox hat on his head, a pouch on his belt containing a snuff box, flint and a firebrand, and a long whip in his hand.
The Mongolian New Year (Tsagan Sar) is a festival of shepherds celebrated by Mongolians, Kalmyks and Buryats two months after the first new moon after the winter solstice and is one of the most important holidays of the Mongols. Therefore, the Mongolian Santa Claus is the most important shepherd. In his hand he has a whip, and on his belt is a bag with a pipe and a firebrand. His assistant’s name is Zazan Ohin – “Girl Snow”. His grandson is Shine Zhil – “New Year.” The grandfather has a hat of fox fur on his head.
Uvlin Uvgun’s New Year’s Eve household is run by a whole family. Uvlin Uvgun himself is a great herdsman, and therefore he comes to the holiday in traditional Mongolian clothes of a herdsman. Officially, the Mongolian Santa Claus was born on December 31 and he is 90 years old. His city of residence is Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. When he arrives, he says the phrase:
Zul sariin bolon bolon shine ond mend mend devshuulie! (Hello to the month of January and the New Year!)
