Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American essayist, poet, philosopher, pastor, lecturer, and social activist; one of the most prominent thinkers and writers in the United States.
In his essay “Nature” (“Nature”, 1836) he was the first to express and formulate the philosophy of transcendentalism. He wrote the famous speech “American Scholar” (“American Scholar”, 1837), which Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. called “Intellectual Declaration of Independence”. His philosophy addressed questions of personality, freedom, and the relationship between spirit and nature. Friend and mentor of Henry David Thoreau.
Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1864), foreign member of the French Academy of Moral and Political Sciences.
