The first Russian edition of the Complete Works of F. Schiller was prepared by the outstanding poet-translator Nikolai Vasilyevich Gerbel in 1857-1860. In St.-Petersburg N.V.Gerbel collaborated in “Sovremennik”, “Otechestvennye Zapiski” and other journals. His work as an editor and publisher became an invaluable contribution to the national culture. N.V.Gerbel has the outstanding merit of publishing for the first time in Russian the collected works of a number of European classics, the first of which was Friedrich Schiller.
The Collected Works of F.Schiller translated by Russian writers by N.V.Gerbel was the first publication in the series, which was followed by all subsequent editions. F.Schiller had the honor of discovering a whole pleiad of the best foreign poets and playwrights who presented classic examples of foreign literature for Russian readers. N.V.Gerbel was already known to Russian society for his poems and translations, and therefore much was expected from the collection of F.Schiller’s works.
N.A. Gerbel turned to the best translators of the time. From scattered publications he compiled a collection of lyric poems, dramatic works and historical works by F. Schiller. Involving the best translators of his time, N.V.Gerbel also collected previously published translations, for which he made careful bibliographic searches. The names of the translators spoke for themselves. Plays and ballads translated by V.A.Zhukovsky occupied a special place in the collection, as well as arrangements of plays by F.Schiller by L.V.Mey. Lyrical poems were translated by F.Miller, F.Tyutchev, M.Dmitriev, A.Fet, M.Mikhailov, A.Glinka, dramatic prose works were translated by N.Gerbel himself, as well as by M.Dostoevsky, the elder brother of the famous writer.
The Collected Works of F. Schiller was reprinted 7 times before the revolution, which shows the great popularity and the highest quality of the Russian translations. The edition continued to be published even after the death of N.V. Gerbel. Each subsequent edition was subjected to careful analysis and revisions. The most recognized works were published in several versions of translation. In addition, N.V.Gerbel accompanied all the plays with accurate bibliographical notes, wrote an introductory biography of F.Schiller and an article about his anniversary. Critical reviews noted the closeness of the translations to the original, which managed to preserve the poetry and power of the original.
Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was a great German poet, philosopher, playwright and military doctor. In the military school formed F.Schiller’s passion for moralistic philosophy, the ideas of the French enlighteners Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau. F.Schiller initially welcomed the French Revolution, but later became disillusioned with it. Dramaturgy (plays “The Robbers”, “Treachery and Love”, which F.Engels called “the first German political-tendentious drama”, etc.) and philosophical lyrics of F.Schiller are imbued with humanism, hatred of arbitrariness and are characterized by the depth of depiction of feelings and characters. F.Schiller believed that only art helps a person to find true spiritual freedom.
