Member of the French Academy.In 1836, Alexander Pushkin called Hugo “a writer of the latest romantic school” and criticized Hugo’s play “Cromwell”, noting that it is a “dull and monstrous” drama with a “stumbling course” in which “there is no action, and the less entertaining”. Pushkin called Hugo a “minor poet,” “uneven, coarse … a favorite of the French public,” the author of “ugly dramas” and “ridiculous fictions … that have offended the great shadow of [Milton]”
