At the end of the XIX century a small factory for the production of icon frames was opened; in 1908 a copper-rolling plant was founded. On its basis in 1917 the artel for rolling red and green copper “Metallostamp” was formed, which in 1932 was named after V. M. Molotov. In 1960 the artel was transformed into the Artistic Factory “Jeweler”, and in 1972 – into the factory of artistic products “Jeweler”, which was later reorganized into CJSC “Mstera Jeweler”. In 1985-1986 alone, the factory produced more than 1 million pieces of silver orders of the Patriotic War of the II degree.
Historically, Mstyora was the center of icon production. According to statistics for 1911, there were 18 icon-painting establishments in Mstyora. 4 firms made coyotes for icons, 24 carried out foil-removal works, there were 8 risochekaniye workshops. There were also 3 brick factories in the town.
In 1923 icon painters and artisans N. P. Klykov and A. I. Bryagin organized a small artel “Old Russian Folk Painting”. In 1931, a larger artel “Proletarian Art” was created, which united Mstyor artists, former icon painters, who worked in the technique of lacquer painting.
