Iconographic type: The icon belongs to the Oranta or Hagiosoritissa type, where the Virgin is depicted without the Child, with her hands raised in prayer or, as in this case, holding a scroll.
Scroll: The scroll contains the text of the prayer in Old Slavonic, beginning with the words “O Lady of Much Mercy…”.
Features: The icon bears inscriptions traditional for Orthodox iconography: “MR ΘΥ” (Mother of God) in the upper part of the icon.
Meaning: The Bogolyubskaya Icon of the Mother of God is a wonder-working icon of the Mother of God revered by the Russian Orthodox Church, painted in the 12th century at the command of Andrei Bogolyubsky in memory of the apparition of the Mother of God to him. It is among the oldest icons of Russian origin and the most venerated.
The celebration takes place on June 18.
