1) The eye sees the eye, but the tooth knows no teeth – they say that beckons and attracts, but remains inaccessible for various reasons.
2) The expression “though the eye sees the eye, the tooth doesn’t know the tooth” is used in I. A. Krylov’s fairy tale “The Fox and the Grapes”. The fox climbed into someone else’s garden in the hope of eating ripe grapes, but its juicy grapes hung very high, no matter from which side she approached.
