CLODT VON JURGENSBURG PETER KARLOVICH (1805 – 1867)Russian sculptor of German origin from the noble family of Clodt von Jurgensburg, the greatest master of monumental and animalistic plastic art of the reign of Nicholas I. Academician (since 1838) and professor emeritus (since 1858) of the Imperial Academy of Arts, full State Councillor (1859). From 1830 he was a free student of the Imperial Academy of Arts, his teachers were the rector of the Academy I. P. Martos, as well as masters of sculpture S. I. Galberg and B. I. Orlovsky. From the early 1830s his statuettes depicting horses became a great success. European fame was brought to the sculptor by the ensemble “Tamers of Horses” of 4 groups for Anichkov Bridge (two of them were installed in 1841, the other two – in 1850; repeats in bronze were also installed at the royal palaces in Berlin in 1842 and Naples in 1846).
