This edition was published as a supplement to the magazine “Niva” for 1913. The edition was edited by G.V. Bykov and P.I. Weinberg in a hard half-leather binding. The critical and biographical sketch was prepared by E.V. Anichkov, forewords – in translation by A. Veselovsky, notes by P.I. Weinberg and P.V. Bykov.
This edition was the first complete collection of Moliere’s works in Russia. It was preceded by a collection published by O.I. Bakst in 1884, which included only a part of the playwright’s works, some plays written in verse were translated in prose, others were abridged. The second edition was carefully checked against the French originals.
Molière created about 40 plays during his life, 32 of which have survived to this day: they are written in various genres: divertissement, farce, comedy-ballet, domestic comedy, etc. The playwright also created a new comedy genre – high comedy, which met a number of rules: verse form, five-act structure, intrigue based on a clash of views, etc. The playwright became the creator of a new comedy genre – high comedy, which met a number of rules: verse form, five-act structure, intrigue based on the clash of views, the unity of action, place and time.
Molière’s work influenced the dramaturgy of France and the whole world literature. His followers in Russia were Krylov, Griboyedov and Fonvizin. Moliere’s plays were staged as palace plays, and then they were included in the repertoire of the first state public theater in St. Petersburg, which was headed by A.P. Sumarokov.
