Background:The work of sculptor E.V. Vuchetich and engineer N.V. Nikitin is a multi-meter high figure of a woman stepping forward with a raised sword. The statue is an allegorical image of the Motherland, calling her sons to battle with the enemy. In 1975, the newspaper Izvestia noted that the theme of the sword links the monument “Back to the Front” in Magnitogorsk with the monumental ensemble on Mamaev Kurgan in Volgograd and the monument in Treptow Park in Berlin (“Warrior-Liberator”).Construction of the monument was begun in May 1959 and completed on October 15, 1967. The sculpture at the time of its creation was the world’s tallest statue.It is most likely that the sculptor molded the figure from the athlete disc jockey Nina Dumbadze, and the face – from his wife Vera. According to various sources, Anastasia Antonovna Peshkova, Valentina Izotova, or Ekaterina Grebneva also posed for the sculpture.
